Anita's Tithing Testimony
"Where your money is so will your heart be”
May 6th, 2010
I’m a Christian believer who struggles with stubbornness. I used to walk around worrying about money and working all the time. I started attending Hosanna church March, 2009. New and completely lost, one day I sat in this very place and was raging angry at Pastor Joseph because he talked about money ... "this tithing thing". Let me tell you, it was not nice. Every time I heard Pastor talk about money, I would get up and go outside and wonder why?
Then, one day while Pastor was talking about the money I choose to stay despite how I was feeling. It needed to be done for God’s glory. After all, what do I know? We are going to deal with this right now! No more running. I was getting mad again and it was boiling over. Then, I decided to speak up. At the time, while I was talking, I realized, may I add a little too late, that I was out of line and really reacting on my emotions ... not being polite at all. So, eventually I stopped talking about it, mind you a little too late.
I had disturbed the whole church.
Then Pastor Joseph did something I was not expecting. He offered me money, not only did he offer me money, he asked the church if anyone else would help me as well? Wow, I was shocked, thinking to myself - I was not asking for money? I did not cause a scene because I wanted their money? I got blessed that day with $250 cash. Later on, Pastor would give me a check of $150. Wow, I was thwarted! I did not get mad to get money, but oddly enough the money they had given me showed me something – support.
September 6, 2009, I was given $250 from everyone. I did not ask for it. I did not even work for it! I tried to rationalize it in my brain. I was still very stubborn and egotistic. But I was happy that I could finally spend money that I did not earn or struggle for. Why are they giving me money? In my heart, Pastor is our leader sent from God. No matter what my emotions and brain are saying, at least do in action what he says. I took the money.
But I was not tithing every week. And I was going about my business as usual. Reading Bible-based books, the Bible, and doing the “Foundations for Life” Bible study. I meet up with Pastor and Sister Betty Ann for coffee at Tim Hortons a couple of weeks after that day. I agreed to give the church $20.00 a week starting November 15, 2009. On February 17th, I started to read the Bible from front to back. I took the 90 day challenge. I started with the Old Testament. As I was reading, I kept noticing how so many people over and over again do not trust in God and all of His signs. I realized how so many people were constantly disobeying and doubting and doing their own things and what made sense to them. It was a constant going away from God. This was getting me aggravated.
Every person that succeeded in the Bible obeyed God – no matter what!
I was getting angry at all the signs and wonders they all got to witness first hand from God! I was wondering what I would have done? Who would I be if I lived back then? Would I be like the believers or the unbelievers? Would I trust my own eyes or doubt them? The sea parting, the first born deaths, the healings, the journey Joseph took and the way it happened for him, the faith Job had despite his friends talking him out of it, the way the many kings failed, how Esther believed and Ruth prospered despite her mother-in-law wanting her to leave her side, how Isaiah unveiled the full dimensions of Gods judgement and salvation – through all of this something clicked inside of me.
All the people who did not succeed did so by their actions. So, I started to ask sister Debra some questions about tithing. I was truly not obeying God in this department – a pretty important part of obedience. I received Jesus Christ in my heart, I got baptized to show obedience to our God, and now I have to take another step into faith. Plus, I truly love seeing God’s glory. So despite my emotions and secular ways, I began to ask Debra about tithing. She broke it down for me.
I noticed that my $25 a week was not a tithe.
I decided to get right with God. After all, He put it on my heart, even if my brain was not co-operating with me at the time. I won`t even talk about my emotions ... I let God deal with that. I don`t want to be lukewarm, nor do I want to be a rebel without a cause - even if I do not understand - I want to trust God - believing only in Him.
So I took that big step to tithe.
From my pay period on April 9, 2010, I got $115.25 in tips and $83.95 pay check. I tithed $20.00 that week.
The following week I got $647.88 in tips and a pay check of $272.71. So again I tithed $93.00 that week.
The last pay I received, I earned $902.20 in tips and a $392.15 pay check, so I tithed $130.00.
Now, I can honestly say despite my brain talk and my emotions I tithe, God is faithful and true.
Now I look forward to my pay check. My first thing to do is tithe - giving to God what is Gods, instead of placing my focus on my bills, rent, and my money going to unseen things that stressed me right out. I’m now able to see how God will manage my pay and send the people to the restaurant, as a tool for His work through me. I look forward to paying God now!
I was full of myself.
But I want to trust God with everything. I truly hate evil. Now that He found me, I want to be like Caleb and Joshua that trusted God, or Deborah who encouraged Barak, or Gideon, and so many more trusting Him no matter what anyone thought. I "want to be blessed when (I) come in and blessed when (I) go out, the Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against (me) will be defeated before you, they will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven" (Deuteronomy 28).
I want the curses gone, I want the blessing, I want to show the whole world Jesus Christ is our Saviour and our faithful God. May he use me as His witness that faith in action, despite my emotional feelings, despite theory and the brain talking - obey God, reading the whole Bible to remind yourself that people really don't get it, even when they see it with their own eyes. GOD DOES remind us that there’s one way - GODS WAY - trust it, move in it, and call Jesus to help you with your faith. I do, every day, and sometimes every minute.
He always shows up - I love giving my money to God now. I don’t give it to people I give it to God and I trust Him.
"Come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord to the house of the God of Jacob He will teach us His ways so that we may walk in His path."(Isaiah 2:3)
Walking in God’s path is working for me. Sometimes it’s a really big step into the unknown. Whether it is baby steps or big steps in God’s direction, I am confident to trust Him and Him alone. When I witness His promises and word come to life in my world, glory to our Lord Christ Jesus. "Let God hurry, let Him hasten His work, so we may see it. Let it approach, let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come, so we may know it" (Isaiah 5:19).
The faster I settle my issues about giving to God, the faster He works on showing up in my life. So far, this is what I am seeing in God
- letting His truth be known through me.
